{"id":928,"date":"2020-06-17T17:30:33","date_gmt":"2020-06-17T21:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbgroup.cs.umass.edu\/?p=928"},"modified":"2020-07-19T17:38:19","modified_gmt":"2020-07-19T21:38:19","slug":"anna-fariha-is-awarded-microsoft-research-dissertation-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dream.cs.umass.edu\/?p=928","title":{"rendered":"Anna Fariha is awarded Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) doctoral candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/people.cs.umass.edu\/~afariha\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anna Fariha<\/a> has recently been awarded a 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/academic-program\/dissertation-grant\/#!grant-recipients\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant<\/a> for her proposal, \u201cEnhancing Usability and Explainability of Data Systems.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Fariha\u2019s work focuses on reducing the usability gap between non-expert users and complex data systems. Her thesis aims to enable data-driven systems to become more democratized and transparent, by providing programming tools for non-technical users, better explanations of algorithmic results and inferences, and tools to assess the trustworthiness of their predictions.<\/p>\n<p>The Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant is awarded annually to a group of diverse students who are typically underrepresented in the field of computing. The program provides funding for a select number of entries, chosen based on the technical and scientific quality and the potential impact of the proposed research.
